Chain of Trails
The Chain of Trails project developed a concept plan for a network of non-motorized trails linking residents, commercial, and recreational centers for the people and visitors of the Mt. Baker Foothills region. This project grew from the work of the Mount Baker Community Steering Committee which began in 1999 to look at ways a trail network can preserve the quality of life and the economy of the Mt. Baker Foothills area.
In 2001, the committee, working with Whatcom Council of Governments, was awarded a $126,000 grant from the FHWA Transportation and Community and System Preservation (TCSP) program. The grant funded the formulation of Whatcom TrailNet, the trail planning subgroup of the Foothills Steering Committee. Working with WCOG, these community members developed and published the Chain of Trails Concept Plan for the Mt. Baker Foothills Region.
