Weigh-in-Motion Software Integration

This project used communication and information technologies to integrate Canadian and American commercial vehicle border inspection and trade processing systems to improve the efficient, safe, and legal movement of trade and commercial transportation, North and South along the corridor.

Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) software integration enhanced the data-sharing functions between the Pacific Highway Weigh Scale (which is on B.C. Highway 15 approximately 1 km north of the U.S. Pacific Highway port-of-entry) and the Port Mann weigh-in-motion equipment which operates on eastbound B.C. Highway 1 near the Port Mann Bridge over the Fraser River.

This project integrated British Columbia (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) and Washington State commercial vehicle database systems to expedite southbound and northbound commercial vehicle travel along the trade corridor. This system enables selective inspection of trucks traveling eastbound on Highway 1 at the Port Mann weigh scale. Work completed included design, software development, and engineering.

More about WIM technologyWeigh-in-Motion; IMTC

WIM technology allows commercial vehicles to be weighed while traveling down the highway, rather than pulling off to use a static scale. While still moving at normal speeds, vehicles enrolled in the program are weighed and given either a green light to bypass the station, or a red light which would require them to stop.

The technology is intended to improve processing of commercial vehicles at the scale and expedite travel. Final testing for this project is underway. Eight B.C.-based carriers will be participating in the pilot project.
